A Catamaran Challenge in Cannes
July 25th 2007

EM&I’s Global Management Conference 2007 in Cannes in May brought together a team from our international offices to plan the company’s expansion over the next decade.

After three days of presentations and workshops to devise the company’s future financial and corporate strategies, the delegates took to the water for a day of team building. The Ile Sainte Marguerite Challenge, named after an island off the coast of Cannes, saw two teams try to outwit each other in a treasure hunt and sailing contest.

The Blue Team, led by David Mortlock, spent the morning learning to sail a racing catamaran from Cannes’ harbour to Ile Sainte Marguerite. While onboard, the team also had to create a sailing-themed quiz for the rival Green Team to answer. Meanwhile, the Green Team headed to Ile Sainte Marguerite, - famous for the fortress prison where the Man in the Iron Mask was held captive - to craft their quiz for the Blue Team based on the island’s history. In the afternoon, the Green Team also had to master the catamaran. The Green Team won the event by a slim whisker after pulling together as a team when a key team member became unwell. “We were a man short, but decided to go for it anyway,” Green Team leader and Human Resources Manager, Julie Fawcett said. “The event pulled us together and cemented working relationships.”
